When puppy training is mentioned, the first thought is about the basic training commands such as sit, stay, down etc. These are of course very important but there are other areas of puppy training that are often overlooked.
Food: It is important to make sure your puppy will tolerate you and others near him and touching his food when he is eating - even small breeds can become food aggressive. At least once a day, when your puppy is eating, talk to him and walk up to him and either stroke him or re-adjust his bowl. This routine can become invaluable when you have young children around - I found my son, as a toddler, had crawled between our dog's legs and was tapping the bottom of the bowl while our dog was eating! I managed to keep calm enough to slowly pull my son back!
Toys & Bones:When your puppy is chewing a bone or playing with a toy, regularly ask him to give - do not tug the item as your canine will think it is a game. Also when you play "tug of war" with your pup, ensure you teach him to stop the game - use the same word as the command everytime - and ask to give. Again when your dog is fully grown, if he gets excited playing whilst young children are in the vicinity, you will have no problem getting him to stop the game.
